Yamunotri Temple is dedicated to the second most sacred rivers of India, River Yamuna. It is believed that, a bath in the holy waters of river Yamuna cleanse all the sins and protect the one from the premature and painful death. The temple is one of the four sites Char Dham pilgrimage. The actual source of river Yamuna lies in the Yamunotri Glacier at a height of 6387 metres near the Bandarpunch peak in the lower Himalayas.
Legend has it that sage Asit Muni used to live at this place and took bath in both the rivers, Ganga and Yamuna, all his life. But in his old age he didn’t able to go to Gangotri. A stream of river Ganga appeared opposite of river Yamuna for the sage to have a dip in.
Present temple was built by Amar Singh Thapa in 18th century. There are two hot springs at Yamunotri which provides relief to the tired hikers namely Surya Kund, which holds boiling hot water which is enough to cook rice and potatoes while Gauri Kund contains tepid water suitable for bathing. Many devotees hang rice and potatoes tied in cloth into this water and when it gets cooked they are taken as the Prasad of goddess. According to legends, after setting Ravan’s Lanka on fire, Hanuman drenched his burning tail in the chilly water of Yamuna at Bandarpunch, that’s why it is named as Bandarpunch which means monkey tail.
The temple remains closed during the winter season, the temple cadre return to their villages. During this time the valley is gripped in pin drop silence and covered with a white thick layer of snow. The temple re-opens with the melting of the snow next summer on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritya which usually falls during the last week of April or the first week of May. During the closing period of this temple, devotees can visit Kharsali to take the blessings of Goddess Yamuna as in this season idol of the deity is transferred to this village.
One can reach the temple after a trekking of 6 km from Hanuman Chatti and 4 km trekking of Janki Chatti. One will find the dense forest and rugged peaks while trekking. There is also an option of hiring horses and ponies to climb up. Most of the time the major parts gets covered with snow so one should carry heavy or light woollen clothes whenever he is travelling to Yamunotri.
Besides this pious temple of Goddess Yamuna, the town has more to offer which includes Divya Shila which is reddish-brown rock near Surya Kund. It is need to be worship here before offering reverence to the main deity goddess Yamuna. It is believed that with the mere touch of this sacred rock one can attain spiritual liberation.
