One of the Char Dhams, Kedarnath Temple is situated in a town named Kedarnath in the Himalaya at a height of 3584 m above sea level near Madakini River. It is among the must visit places in Hindus at least once in a lifetime. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The town houses more than 200 temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Before the closing Kapat (doors) of Kedarnath the lord gets transferred to Ukhimath. Legend has it that, the existence of this temple is a result of Panch Pandava’s search of Lord Shiva to make up their sins of their brothers during the Kurukshetra War. Lord Shiva didn’t want meet them so he took the form of a bull and started to force himself in the ground, leaving his hump visible. But later on, they impressed Lord by their determination and got blessed and permitted to worship at Kedarnath. It is believed that the structure that is worshipped in the temple is a hump of the bull and rest of the parts appeared in Tungnath Temple, Rudranatrh Temple, Masmaheshwar Temple and Kalpeshwar Temple which are commonly known as Panch Kedar.
Because the place is a religious destination so most of its sightseeing have a mythological connection. But still it is loved by all kinds tourist. Some popular places around the temple are Gandhi Sarovar, a small lake having crystal clear water. It is located at the foot of Kedarnath and Kirthi Stambh. Sonprayag, it is a place of confluence of two holy rivers, Basuki and Mandakini. It is believed that a bath at this confluence attains ‘Moksha’. The place also offers scintillating view of snow covered mountains and lush green Sonpyarag valley. Gaurikund Temple, it is dedicated to goddess Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva. Legend has it that, the goddess did penance and yoga practice here to win over the heart of her husband. Vasuki Tal, a glacial lake where, Lord Vishnu took bath on Rakshabandhan. Visitors can savour a majestic view of the Chaukhamba Peaks from the lake. One can also spot Brahma Kamal and other Himalayan flowers blooming around the lake. Shankaracharya Samadhi, it is the place where Adi Shankaracharya attained ‘Moksha’. He was believed to be the person credited with unifying and establishing the main currents of thought in Hinduism.
The place welcomes all kinds of tourists whether they are Indians or foreigners in groups or solos. Visitors have two options to reach the temple, one is, they have to trek 16 km through the paved road of Gaurikund. One can hire horse or ponies to climb up the steep path. And the other option is for those who don’t want to trek that much so they can hire a helicopter from Guptkashi, Phata or Sirsi which will drop you at the distance of 500 m from the main temple.
