Badrinath Temple Yatra
Badrinath is a town in Chamoli District in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It houses the holy Badrinath Temple which is dedicated to lord Vishnu and one of the Char Dhams pilgrimage. Meaning of its name is ‘Lord of Berry’ because it is said that trees of Berry grow abundantly in this area.
According to history of this temple, it was re-established as the main and important pilgrimage site by Adi Shankaracharya in the 7th century. Many years ago, devotees used walk hundreds of miles to visit this temple. The temple has faced devastation many times due to earthquakes and avalanches.
There are many stories related to the name of this temple. One of them is when lord Vishnu was meditating here suddenly very much snow fall get started. He was completely submerged in the snow. Seeing his condition, goddess Lakshmi felt bad. She stood besides lord vishnu and took the form of berry tree and began to bear all the snow which was falling on him. Goddess Lakshmi went on axtreme penance to save lord Vishnu from from sunlight, rain and snow. Many years later, when lord Vishnu completed his tenure, he saw that goddess was covered in snow. Then he looked at the tenacity of the goddess lakshmi and announced to be worshipped along with goddess at the same place and also said that
because you have made my defence as a berry (badri) tree, so from today I will be known as Badri's Nath Badrinath. The exact place where lord did meditation is now known as Tapt Kund.
The badrinath temple is among the five related shrines dedicated to lord Vishnu. Another four temples are Yogadhyan Temple located in Pandukeshwar, Bhavishya Badri located in a village named Subhain at a distance of 17 km from Joshimath, Vridh Badri located in Animath Village. The temple is considered to be the one of the holiest Hindu four divine sites.
There are several festivals which are celebrated in the shrine such as Mata Murti ka Mela, which resembles the descent of river Ganga on earth. The festival of Badri Kedar is celebrated in the month of June in both the temples, Badrinath and Kedarnath. It is an eight day festival and artists from all over the country perform during the festival. And there are various religious practices which perform here everyday like Maha Abhiskek, Geeta path, Bhagwat Puja and many more activities.
Along with the main shrine the place has many other holy spots such as Tapt Kund, Surya Kund, Charan Paduka, Narad Kund, Neelkanth Peeth, Bheem Pul, Ganesh Cave etc.
The temple remains closed during the winter season because of heavy snowfall and the idol of the deity is shifted to Joshimath as it is the winter seat of the lord. Devotees visit here during the period of closing of the main temple. The temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritya or in the starting of summer season. Visitors must carry heavy or light woollen clothes as the climate can be too cold.
Roadway is the best option to reach here as the temple town is well connected to the other small and big destinations of the Uttarakhand and other states through interstate bus services. To reach this temple by airways or railways one should arrive at it’s nearest airport or railway station which are situated in Dehradun and Haridwar and then he can opt between hiring a taxi or boarding a bus.
